The best way to store coffee

Once you open a sealed package of coffee, it starts to lose its freshness unless appropriately stored. Coffee should be stored in the dark. So, if you use a clear container to store your coffee, keep it in a dark cabinet. Alternatively, use a ceramic, opaque glass or a non-reactive metal container to store your coffee. For best results, buy just-roasted coffee in small batches and store it carefully. If you buy in larger quantities, keep it in an airtight container in the dark. Do not use the larger container to make your daily cuppa. Instead, store a smaller portion in a smaller container for everyday use. This keeps the larger batch fresher.

The best way to store tea

Tea should be stored in an airtight container to protect from moisture and air. It also has to be stored away from heat, odours and light. So if tea is stored in clear containers, it should be kept in a dark cabinet. It should not be stored next to anything with strong odours, as this will impact the taste and fragrance of your tea. A strong tea stored next to a delicate tea can influence its fragrance. Use containers with double-walled lids, good seals and bags that are odour free, multi-ply and resealable. Buy teas in smaller quantities and drink them fresh to get the best flavour in your teacup.

Frothed milk

Frothed milk is milk that has been aerated to produce air bubbles in it. Frothed milk should ideally be dense and fluffy. The different texture of frothed milk adds to the creamy mouthfeel of the beverage when you sip from your teacup. You cannot make certain beverages such as a cappuccino without frothed milk. The frothing of the milk makes it taste sweeter than it is.

Frothed milk vs steamed milk

Steamed milk has a foam that is smaller and less visible than that of frothed milk. It is called a microfoam. This microfoam makes the milk feel velvety and heavier. While frothed milk can be hot or cold, steamed milk is always hot.

Coffee grinding at home

If you are very fond of coffee, you will appreciate the extra flavour and aroma of freshly ground coffee. A blade grinder will result in uneven pieces of coffee. A hand grinder takes a little more effort but gives you complete control over the grinding duration and the size and coarseness of the ground coffee.

Types of coffee grinds

Coarse Grind: This will be ideal for coffee brewed in percolators and for french press coffees. More extended contact with hot water will extract better flavour.

Medium Grind: This is the most common grind that is available commercially. It is very versatile and contact with hot water for a shorter time gives good flavour.

Fine Grind: This kind of coffee is useful for making espresso, filter brew coffee makers and electric drip machines.

Do I need a kettle to make tea or coffee?

You can boil water for tea or coffee in any utensil. But a kettle makes it convenient to boil and pour it as desired.

Brewing a stronger tea

To enjoy a teacup of stronger tea, use more tea leaves and do not extend the brewing time.Â
